How to set a budget you won't break in nine days

Most budgets fail because they were a wish. Here's how to set one from what you actually spent.

A budget is a prediction. Most people write down what they hope to spend, discover in nine days that the prediction was fiction, and conclude they are bad with money. The prediction was just badly made.

Track for a month before you budget for one

Completo shows this month's reports on the free plan for exactly this reason. Spend one month only capturing, then read the category breakdown. That number — the real one — is your starting point.

Set the first budget five per cent below reality

If groceries came to $420, set $400. Not $300. A budget you clear is a budget you keep; a budget you blow in week two teaches you to ignore the app.

Tighten it next month, once clearing it is normal.

Use rollover for the lumpy ones

Some categories are not monthly in real life. Car maintenance, clothes, gifts. For those, turn on rollover so unspent money carries into the next period instead of resetting and making a quiet month look like a win it wasn't.

Read it in days, not percentages

'$34 over with nine days to go' is a sentence you can act on. '113% of budget' is a sentence you can only feel bad about. Completo states the former on purpose.
